When our founder, Laurie, first started Blue Canoe she really wanted to do yoga wearing natural fabrics rather than synthetics. She knew that cotton fabric would allow air flow, limit sweating, and feel soft against her skin. She didn’t like the feel of synthetics and knew that fabrics such as nylon and polyester have numerous negative effects on the ecosystem. Polyester is created by a chemical process from substances extracted from oil and oil refining is the most prevalent contributor to global warming. Polyester and nylon do not biodegrade, but off-gas toxins for many years in landfills. When washed, synthetic fabrics shed tiny microplastics that enter our waterways and eventually the ocean.
